With Instructional Designing Static Content Can Become Interactive

As an Instructional Designer, in every project, I come across certain challenging situations where I feel like I am constantly running out of ideas. But this time, before I could start the project, I was completely blank. Reason – We got a requirement to turn a simple quiz with true and false questions into an interactive output.

“Can you imagine a course which has absolutely no content, no graphics, no animations, no interactions?”, but just a bunch of questions and the expectations of client to build an interactive eLearning course.

Previously, we worked with a couple of Universities and Fortune clients to develop question banks – these were just ‘question banks’. But this time things were different. And this challenge intrigued me to think differently. After a brainstorming session, we came up with some ideas which in fact clicked and the client was very happy with the output. Here’s what we did:

• Instead of asking linear questions, we used (visualised) the custom graphics to mimic the day-to-day job activities of employees
• As the client was from Energy Supply industry, we weaved the assessment around relevant scenarios
• Rather than using real images, we drew all the key elements so that we can modify them if required
• The elements we used were not general, but specific to the question
• Hotspots were provided for the user to click – Once clicked, the question was displayed within the popup
• Learners were provided with an instant corrective feedback specific to each response

Note: It’s not necessary that all question banks can fit in such strategy. In our case, we were fortunate enough to get the content that was suffice to create respective scenarios for each question.
